A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process that provides, in general, a new way of doing something, or offers a new technical solution to a problem.  In order to be patentable, the invention must fulfill certain conditions.

Eg: A Shoe Fastener or the Velcro in a child’s shoe is a patented idea.

Federal Law No. 44 for the year 1992 pertaining to the Industrial Regulation and Protection of Patents, Industrial Drawings, and Designs was replaced by Federal Law No. 17 for the year 2002 and later amended by the Federal law 31 for the year 2006. A patent granted under the Federal law of the United Arab Emirates provides protection in the seven emirates namely Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras-Al-Khaimah, Umm-Al-Quwain and Ajman.
